Why sampling is easier digitally
Screen and rotary printing need a screen for every colour, and every design change means new screens. Digital printing goes from the file to the fabric, so a design can be sampled, changed and sampled again without any screen cost. That makes it practical to test many designs and colourways before choosing what to produce.
Short runs and long runs
With no screens to set up, digital printing suits samples, short and medium runs and collections with many designs. For very long runs of a single design, rotary screen printing usually becomes cheaper per metre. Many producers use both: digital for development and smaller quantities, rotary for large repeat orders.
Who sets the minimum order?
The minimum is set by each printer, not by the technology. It depends on the fabric, the process, the width and how the job is set up on the machine. Ask for the minimum for your specific fabric and design rather than relying on a general figure.
